excise

Surgically cut out

Excise works in two directions.

To excise something is to cut it out or remove it surgically: The surgeon excised the tumor.

The word applies figuratively to editing: The censors excised several scenes from the film.

Separately, an excise is a tax on goods produced or sold within a country—distinct from customs duties on imports: excise tax on tobacco.
