factorization

Finding multiplicative components

Factorization is the process of breaking a number or expression into components that multiply together to produce the original.

In arithmetic, the factorization of 12 is 2 × 2 × 3.

In algebra, factoring polynomials reverses expansion: x² − 4 becomes (x + 2)(x − 2).

Prime factorization breaks a number into its prime components: The prime factorization of 60 is 2 × 2 × 3 × 5.
