disagreement

Lack of consensus

Disagreement is a difference of opinion or failure to agree: There was some disagreement about how to proceed.

It can range from mild difference to open conflict.

A disagreement between accounts or stories means they don't match up.

The word often softens what might otherwise be called an argument or dispute: We had a minor disagreement.
