Relegation is the act of moving something to a lower position, rank, or status.
In British football and other sports leagues, relegation is the system by which the worst-performing teams drop to a lower division at season's end: The club faces relegation if they lose tomorrow.
More broadly, to consign something to relegation is to dismiss it as unimportant: the relegation of her concerns to a footnote.
