quadrants

Graph paper divisions

Quadrants are four parts created by dividing something into quarters.

In geometry, the four sections formed by intersecting x and y axes are quadrants, numbered counterclockwise from the upper right.

A quadrant was historically a navigation instrument shaped like a quarter-circle.

The term appears in any context involving fourfold division: the northwest quadrant of the city, the upper left quadrant of the screen.
