unions

Acts of combining

Unions are organizations of workers formed to protect shared interests—wages, working conditions, benefits.

Members pay dues and elect leaders who negotiate collectively with employers.

To unionize is to form or join such an organization: The warehouse workers voted to unionize.

Union also means joining together more broadly: a union of two families through marriage, the European Union, the Union (the United States, especially the northern states during the Civil War).

The union of two things is their combination into one.
