wards
Dependents under guardianship
Wards are areas or divisions—of a hospital, prison, city, or electoral district.
A hospital ward houses patients with similar conditions: the maternity ward, the psychiatric ward.
In government, a ward is a voting district or the constituents it represents.
A ward is also a person, especially a child, under legal protection of a guardian or the state: a ward of the court.
To ward off something is to deflect or repel it: ward off evil spirits, ward off a cold.
