dead hang

Grip without movement

A dead hang is hanging from a bar or overhead support with arms fully extended and body relaxed, bearing weight passively rather than actively pulling up.

Used in exercise to build grip strength and decompress the spine: I do a sixty-second dead hang every morning.

The dead indicates complete stillness—no swinging, kipping, or muscular engagement beyond maintaining grip.
