warm-up

Loosen muscles first

A warm-up is preparation before the main event—stretching and light exercise before athletics, vocal scales before singing, preliminary sketches before painting.

The term extends to any gradual buildup: The opening act was a warm-up for the headliner.

As a verb phrase, to warm up is to prepare in this way, or to become more animated: The crowd warmed up after the first few songs.
