dead
Gone from existence
Dead characterizes something that is not living, inanimate, expired, or all of these. The dead refers to dead people generally.
It has an intensifying force in some fixed expressions, like a dead giveaway and dead certain.
Similarly, dead of winter and dead of night refer to the darkest, most intense part.
Things that were never literally alive may be called dead when they are no longer of use or required: The batteries in my remote control are dead.
