cool-down

Gradual intensity reduction

A cool-down is a period of light activity after intense exercise, allowing heart rate and breathing to return to normal gradually: Don't skip the cool-down after your run.

The term extends to any gradual reduction in intensity or tension—a cool-down period after heated negotiations, or letting an engine idle before shutting off.
