counterboring
Recessing for fasteners
Counterboring is enlarging a portion of an existing hole to a specific diameter and depth, typically to accommodate a bolt head or fastener so it sits flush with or below the surface.
The technique creates a flat-bottomed cylindrical recess: The machinist counterbored the holes for the socket head cap screws.
A counterbore is both the tool used and the resulting recess.
