control surface

Plane steering component

A control surface is a movable part on an aircraft—ailerons, elevators, rudders—that pilots adjust to steer or stabilize flight.

The term extends to any interface element that controls a system: mixing boards have control surfaces for adjusting audio levels, and software interfaces offer virtual control surfaces for manipulating parameters.
