speed brake
Aircraft slowing panel
A speed brake is a control surface on an aircraft designed to increase drag and slow the plane down without changing its pitch or direction.
Unlike landing gear or flaps, speed brakes deploy symmetrically and are used during descent, approach, or after touchdown to reduce speed quickly: The pilot deployed the speed brakes to lose altitude without gaining airspeed.
Also called an airbrake.
