vertical stabilizer

Aircraft tail fin

A vertical stabilizer is the upright fin at the tail of an aircraft, providing directional stability and preventing the plane from yawing side to side.

The rudder is typically hinged to its trailing edge.

Also called a vertical fin or, in British usage, a fin.
