duodenum

First intestinal segment

The duodenum is the first section of the small intestine, connecting the stomach to the jejunum.

It receives partially digested food from the stomach along with bile and pancreatic secretions, continuing the digestive process.

The name comes from its length—about twelve finger-widths.

Plural: duodena or duodenums.
