semicolon

Pause between clauses

A semicolon is a punctuation mark (;) that creates a pause stronger than a comma but weaker than a period.

It typically joins closely related independent clauses without a conjunction: She loved the city; he preferred the country.

Semicolons also separate items in lists when the items themselves contain commas.
