list

Enumerated written sequence

Several different words spelled list made their way into English, but only two get much contemporary use.

The commonest one is a noun denoting a series of like items, typically in written form: passenger list, shopping list.

When you list something, you either add it to a list, or make a list: List the names of students who passed the exam.

The verbal meaning of list communicates a physical object leaning or deviating from vertical: The building began to list after severe floods.
