chewing
Working your jaw
Chewing is the act of grinding food between the teeth—what you do before swallowing.
The word extends to anything worked over repeatedly in the mouth: chewing gum, chewing tobacco.
To chew on something figuratively is to think it over: Let me chew on that proposal.
