shelving

Horizontal board arrangement

Shelving is the act of putting something on a shelf, or more commonly, postponing it indefinitely: The committee voted to shelve the proposal.

When you shelve a project, you set it aside rather than actively pursue it—the metaphor suggests storage rather than disposal.

Shelving also refers collectively to shelves as fixtures: We need more shelving in the garage.
