angina

Heart's distress signal

Angina is chest pain caused by reduced blood flow to the heart, typically felt as pressure, tightness, or squeezing.

The full medical term is angina pectoris.

Angina usually signals coronary artery disease and often occurs during physical exertion or stress: He felt angina coming on while climbing the stairs.

The word also refers to any condition involving throat inflammation, as in Ludwig's angina.
