silos

Tall farm storage

Silos are tall cylindrical structures for storing grain, fermented feed, or other bulk materials on farms.

The word extends to any isolated storage or containment system.

In business and organizational contexts, silos describe departments or groups that operate in isolation, hoarding information rather than sharing it: Marketing and engineering work in silos.

To silo something is to compartmentalize it: The data was siloed across multiple systems.

Underground silos house intercontinental ballistic missiles.
