canal boat

Lock-traversing craft

A canal boat is a long, narrow vessel designed to navigate canals—artificial waterways too shallow and narrow for conventional ships.

Traditional canal boats were pulled by horses or mules walking along towpaths; modern versions are motorized.

In Britain, canal boats are popular for leisure cruising and as permanent houseboats: They spent their holiday on a canal boat in the Cotswolds.
