butty

British slang sandwich

Butty is British dialect, chiefly from the Midlands and North of England, for a sandwich or filled bread roll: a bacon butty, a chip butty.

The word likely comes from buttered bread.

In Welsh mining communities, a butty was also a work partner or mate who shared labor and wages—a meaning now largely historical.
