calcaneus

Largest tarsal bone

The calcaneus is the heel bone, the largest bone in the human foot.

It forms the prominence of the heel and bears much of the body's weight during standing and walking.

Medical contexts use calcaneus; everyday speech just says heel: The X-ray showed a fractured calcaneus.
