hock

Pledge for cash

Hock has two unrelated meanings in English.

One is the joint in an animal's hind leg, corresponding roughly to the human ankle—the bent part you see on a horse or dog.

The other hock is a verb meaning to pawn: I had to hock my watch to make rent.

Something in hock is pawned or in debt.

White Rhine wines are also called hock, from the German town Hochheim.
