brazilwood

Tropical dye source

Brazilwood is a tropical tree yielding a dense, reddish wood prized for making dyes and fine violin bows.

The tree gave its name to Brazil, not the reverse—Portuguese explorers found such abundance of the valuable dyewood there that they named the land after it.

The red dye extracted from brazilwood colored European textiles for centuries before synthetic dyes replaced it.
