particleboard

Compressed wood product

Particleboard is an engineered wood product made from wood chips, shavings, or sawdust compressed with resin into rigid sheets.

It's cheaper and weaker than plywood or solid wood, used for furniture, cabinets, and subflooring where strength isn't critical: The shelves were sagging particleboard.

Also called chipboard.
