olivine

Mantle's green mineral

Olivine is a greenish mineral common in igneous rocks, composed of magnesium and iron silicate.

It forms the glassy green crystals in basalt and is a major component of Earth's upper mantle.

Gem-quality olivine is called peridot.

The name comes from its olive-green color.
