airbrake

Compressed-gas braking system

An airbrake is a braking system that uses compressed air to slow or stop heavy vehicles—trains, trucks, buses.

The system's fail-safe design means loss of air pressure causes the brakes to engage rather than release.

Airbrake also refers to a hinged surface on an aircraft that creates drag to reduce speed during descent or landing.
