semi

Large freight truck

Semi is a prefix meaning half or partly: semicircle, semiconscious, semiannual.

On its own, semi is informal shorthand for a semitrailer truck—the large rigs hauling freight on highways: A semi jackknifed on the interstate.

In British English, semi alone often means a semidetached house—one sharing a wall with its neighbor.
