drum brake

Wheel-slowing cylinder mechanism

A drum brake is a braking system where curved shoes press outward against the inner surface of a rotating cylindrical drum attached to the wheel.

The friction slows the vehicle.

Drum brakes were standard on automobiles before disc brakes largely replaced them, though they remain common on rear wheels and heavy trucks: The mechanic said my drum brakes need new shoes.
