emergency stop
Sudden safety halt
An emergency stop is the immediate halting of machinery, a vehicle, or a process to prevent injury or damage.
The term appears in industrial settings for kill switches that cut power instantly, and in driving for sudden braking to avoid collision: The instructor had me practice emergency stops.
Often shortened to e-stop in technical contexts.
