backup system
Secondary operational reserve
A backup system is a secondary mechanism designed to take over if the primary one fails.
The term appears most often in computing, where backup systems preserve data or maintain operations during outages: The backup system kicked in when the main server crashed.
More broadly, any redundant arrangement kept in reserve: We have a backup system in case the generator fails.
