parking brake

Stationary vehicle lever

A parking brake is a mechanism that holds a stationary vehicle in place, preventing it from rolling.

In cars with manual transmissions, it's engaged when parked; in automatics, it provides backup to the transmission's park gear.

Also called emergency brake or handbrake, though modern versions are often foot-operated or electronic: Don't forget to release the parking brake before driving.
