engine brake
Throttle-off deceleration system
An engine brake is a mechanism that slows a vehicle by using the engine's compression rather than traditional friction brakes.
In diesel trucks, the engine brake creates resistance by releasing compressed air from the cylinders, producing a distinctive loud stuttering sound: The trucker downshifted and hit the engine brake on the steep grade.
Signs reading "No Engine Brake" or "Jake Brake Prohibited" appear in residential areas because of the noise.
Also called a compression brake or by the trademark Jake brake.
