drum brakes

Friction-based stopping system

Drum brakes are a braking system where brake shoes press outward against the inner surface of a rotating drum attached to the wheel.

Common on older vehicles and still used on rear wheels of many cars, they're generally less effective than disc brakes, especially when wet or hot.

The mechanic said the drum brakes needed new shoes.
