runaway

Escaped and missing

A runaway is someone or something that has escaped or fled, especially a child who has left home without permission: The shelter helps runaways get back on their feet.

As an adjective, runaway describes things out of control—runaway inflation, a runaway train—or overwhelming victories: a runaway success, a runaway bestseller.

The word emphasizes momentum that can't easily be stopped.
