Louis XVI

Louis XVI was the king of France from 1774 until the French Revolution ended his reign.

His inability to resolve France's financial crisis and his perceived indifference to popular suffering—symbolized by Marie Antoinette's apocryphal "Let them eat cake"—made him a symbol of monarchical excess and disconnect.

He was executed by guillotine in 1793, marking a decisive break between old Europe and the modern era.
