Charles I

Beheaded English king

Charles I was King of England, Scotland, and Ireland from 1625 until his execution in 1649.

His conflicts with Parliament over taxation and religious policy led to the English Civil War.

Defeated by Parliamentarian forces, he was tried for treason and beheaded—the first English monarch executed by his own government.

His death ushered in the Commonwealth under Oliver Cromwell.
