Wampanoag

Thanksgiving feast hosts

Wampanoag refers to a Native American people indigenous to southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island, including Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket.

The Wampanoag are historically significant for their early contact with English colonists—they assisted the Plymouth settlers and participated in what became known as the first Thanksgiving.

The name means "People of the First Light" or "Eastern People." Today the Wampanoag Nation continues as a federally recognized tribe: The Wampanoag have lived in this region for over 12,000 years.
