Sioux

Great Plains nation

Sioux refers to a group of Native American peoples of the Great Plains, or to their related languages.

The term encompasses three major divisions—Lakota, Dakota, and Nakota—distinguished by dialect.

The Sioux were among the last tribes to resist U.S. expansion.

The word comes from an Ojibwe term meaning "little snakes," which some consider pejorative; many prefer their own names, particularly Lakota.
