Narragansett

Algonquian coastal people

Narragansett refers to an Algonquian people indigenous to Rhode Island, or a member of that people.

The Narragansett were among the most powerful tribes in New England before European colonization.

The term also names their language, now extinct, and appears in place names throughout Rhode Island: Narragansett Bay, the town of Narragansett.

Narragansett is also a breed of horse and a type of turkey developed in Rhode Island.
