dugout canoe
Log-carved watercraft
A dugout canoe is a boat made by hollowing out a single log, one of the oldest and most widespread watercraft designs in human history.
The hull is carved or burned out from the solid wood, leaving the outer surface intact.
Indigenous peoples across the Americas, Africa, Pacific islands, and elsewhere developed sophisticated dugout traditions, with some vessels large enough to carry dozens of people.
The museum displayed a dugout canoe carved from a massive cypress trunk.
