Squanto

Plymouth colony's guide

Squanto was a Patuxet man who served as interpreter and guide for the Plymouth colonists in the 1620s.

Having learned English during earlier captivity in Europe, he helped the settlers survive by teaching them to cultivate corn and navigate local diplomacy.

His name has become shorthand for Indigenous assistance to early European colonists: Every Thanksgiving story mentions Squanto.
