Massasoit

Plymouth Colony ally

Massasoit was the paramount chief of the Wampanoag confederacy who allied with the Pilgrims at Plymouth Colony in 1621.

His treaty with the English colonists kept peace for decades.

The name means "great sachem" in the Wampanoag language and is now attached to places, schools, and institutions throughout New England: Massasoit Community College, Massasoit State Park.
