Iroquois

Six Nations alliance

Iroquois refers to a confederacy of Indigenous peoples originally from the northeastern woodlands of North America, traditionally comprising six nations: Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, Seneca, and Tuscarora.

The Iroquois Confederacy, also called the Haudenosaunee or Six Nations, was one of the most powerful Native American political alliances and influenced early American democratic thought.

The term also designates the family of languages spoken by these peoples.

The Iroquois governed through a sophisticated system of councils and consensus.
