Wampanoags
Plymouth Colony neighbors
The Wampanoag are a Native American people indigenous to the northeastern United States, particularly southeastern Massachusetts and eastern Rhode Island, including Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket.
They are historically significant as the tribe that assisted the Pilgrims at Plymouth Colony and participated in the 1621 harvest celebration often called the first Thanksgiving.
The name means "People of the First Light" or "Easterners." The Wampanoag Nation continues to maintain tribal lands in Massachusetts today.
