Uyghurs
Turkic Chinese minority
Uyghurs are a Turkic ethnic group native to Central Asia, predominantly living in the Xinjiang region of northwestern China.
They are predominantly Muslim and have their own language, culture, and historical identity distinct from the Han Chinese majority.
Since the 2010s, international attention has focused on Chinese government policies toward Uyghurs, including mass detention, surveillance, and what critics describe as cultural suppression or genocide: The treatment of the Uyghurs has drawn international condemnation.
Also spelled Uighurs.
