imam

Leads congregational prayer

An imam is a Muslim religious leader, particularly one who leads prayers at a mosque.

In Sunni Islam, any knowledgeable Muslim may serve as imam for congregational prayer.

In Shia Islam, Imam (often capitalized) refers to one of the divinely appointed successors of Muhammad, a far more exalted role.

The imam delivered the Friday sermon.
